Regulations & Fishing zones
Quebec’s Natural Ressources and Wildlife Ministry releases numerous publications, including« Sport Fishing in Quebec » which list the rules and regulations to be followed , in addition they offer safety advice. They also include maps indicating various fishing zones.
Land Categories I and II
To fish in the James Bay region, visitors must respect the laws governing hunting and fishing on the James Bay and New-Quebec territories. The James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, ratified in 1975, recognizes privileged land tenure rights on the territory. Consequently, land categories I and II are strictly reserved for First Nations use. Therefore, you must obtain proper authorization from the governing band counsel for any fishing or hunting.
Land Category III
Fishing is permitted in category III land as stipulated by the rules elsewhere in Quebec. Some fish species, such as Lake Whitefish, are reserved for First Nations. North of the 52nd parallel, non-residents of Quebec must use the services of an outfitter.
