Situated less than one hour from the Radisson route, discover the last section of the La Grande generating station: La Grande 1. Over 6,000 workers participated in the construction of this run-of-the-river generating station. Composed of 640,000 m3 of concrete—enough to build a sidewalk from Montreal to Miami, this power plant will impress you with its drive shafts measuring over two metres in diameter. You'll be amazed to see how well our infrastructures blend with the natural environment. Imposing and majestic!

From early 1950 until the beginning of 2000, 185,000 workers spent time in the Quebec taiga. Their mission? To build one of the biggest hydro-electric facilities in the world: La Grande Complex. To highlight the invaluable contribution of these pioneers, the Société des sites historiques de Radisson reconstituted the G-68 exploration camp. Named the Robert A. Boyd, this tent village invites visitors to experience what daily life was like for the thousands of anonymous heroes who blazed the trail for the future.

In addition to the beautiful Nordic landscape, at the end of the James Bay route you will discover 7,722 MW of power. This is North America's biggest generating site. At a depth of 140 m, it is like a vast cathedral carved into the bedrock ! You’ll be amazed when you look up at this dam as high as a 53-story building. Come fathom the giant staircase made up of 10 stairs each the size of two football fields. Wherever you look you’ll be amazed by the sheer size of the facility and its surrounding beauty.

Nearly 96% of this electricity originates from generating stations, and almost half of this is produced directly at the La Grande generating facility. Hydro-Quebec invites you to come and visit the interpretation centre. This permanent display shows the natural and human habitats of the James Bay region. Take the opportunity to increase your knowledge about the where, how and why of electricity production.
