« Better safe than sorry ». This old adage takes on a whole new meaning when you are travelling on isolated, unfamiliar roads in such a large region. Going on an adventure requires some preparation, especially if you plan on using the Northern Route or the Transtaïga Route. To make sure that your trip is a success and to help you avoid any mishaps we suggest you consider the following advice: • Have your vehicle inspected. Make sure it is in good condition • When leaving a city make sure you fill up with gas • Inform a friend or family member of your schedule and itinerary • Make sure you carry these items with you : road maps and other pertinent maps for your activities, including topographic maps and your tourist guide • Take out a travel insurance policy • Make sure that you have all the permits and licenses necessary for your activity (registration, hunting or fishing license, etc.) • Complete your documentation by stopping in the different permanent and seasonal tourist information bureaus During your stay, have in your possesion at all times: • Matches, a flashlight, candles • Basic tool box • Spare tire (including a « full size » spare, if you plan on using gravel roads) • Water, drinks and snacks • Cash • Sunglasses • First aid kit • Window washer liquid, motor oil • Change of clothes and blankets • Flares • Rope and string • Maps of the region • Knife and/or hatchet • Compass • Garbage bags • Driver’s, hunting and fishing license. • Medication (if necessary) • Camera • In the summer, add these items to the list: • Sunscreen • Hat or baseball cap • Insect repellent • In winter, add these items to your list: • Traction aids • Lock de-icer • Anti-freeze for your gas line • Anti-freeze for your radiator • Shovel • Very warm clothes, a tuque, mittens, wool socks, etc.
