James Bay Crossing on Skis

Does the thought of immersing yourself in Native culture or becoming one with nature as a northern explorer and snow warrior make your heart race? Have you ever wanted to see the snow and ice of the Hudson Bay lowland first-hand? Then discover the Arctic adventurer in you and retrace the exploration routes of the Cree, early English and French navigators, and the fur traders. Welcome to “Mushkegowuk”, the James Bay Coast, an untamed land frozen in time, ancestral home of the Muskego Cree. Over the course of 11 days, in what the natives refer to as “Bibon” – winter, good and proper, discover the Great North. Master your skills on this challenging ski expedition over pack ice to the sheltered black spruce stands between Moosonee, Ontario and Waskaganish, Quebec. Trace the paw tracks of the wabusk – Canada’s great white bear, and live to tell the tale!

Lake Matagami Crossing: “Always Further North!”

The organizers of the Abitibi Lake Crossing are opening up new horizons: the Matagami Lake Crossing. The same pleasures, always further North : skis, sleds winter camping and friendships that are established during 5 days and 4 nights on the ice. Take part in this exclusive expedition of 100 km (63 miles) on the frozen waters of Lake Matagami. Admire the beauty of a winter landscape and the contrast between the vastness of the wide-open lake and the snowy peeks of the Mont-Laurier chain, one of the most ancient volcanoes in North America. Mother Nature will surprise you by the splendor of here starry nights, her blue skies and the ferocity of her blizzards. To push your limits, nothing beats physical effort and adaptation to the cold. The Great White North in all its splendor and with its rigorous climate constitutes the canvas on which will occur an event that cannot be ignored in the world of skiing. Accompanied by your professional guides, you will discover the techniques and equipments used during arctic expeditions. You will learn to adapt to the surprising climate that oscillates between 0 and -40 degrees Celsius and to appreciate the joys of winter camping. And when evening comes, the Lake Matagami Crossing will also give warm moments while enjoying hot and nutritious meals before comfortably falling asleep inside your tent.

Initiation to Winter Camping

Discover the beauty of Northern Québec this winter by learning the activities proper to that environment. What could be better than combining these two typically northern activities – expedition skiing and winter camping. On the schedule are two days of skiing with sleds and an introduction to winter camping on Lake Matagami.

Hunting and Fishing

Ice fishing

Ice fishing is a tradition handed down by the First Nations and currently practiced just about everywhere in Québec as a recreational activity. As soon as the ice is thick enough, colourful little wooden shacks are dragged out onto lakes and rivers. The shacks, which are usually rented, provide varying degrees of comfort. Basically, they offer much-appreciated shelter from the wind and allow ice-fishers to extend their time outdoors. Off-season, the shacks are stored along the shoreline.

Caribou Hunting
Québec is home to over 750,000 caribou distributed between the Leaf River herd and the George River herd. These phenomenal cohorts move in columns in a constant circular migration that takes them across Québec’s High Arctic and Labrador.

Caribou hunters practise fine hunting techniques, from actively pursuing the animal to hunting from a hide. Given the environment and the relative abundance of game (when you’re hunting along a migratory route), approaching game is often an easy task. You can even choose your trophy and fire from a reasonable distance.
It is mandatory for non-residents interested in hunting north of the 52nd parallel to use the services of an outfitter. Accommodations are usually provided in a warm and welcoming satellite camp or a rustic forest camp. Certain packages include a guide on site who will do everything to make sure your dreams of adventure come true.

Caribou Migration
Source

Hundreds of thousands of migratory caribou criss-cross an area of over 1 000 000 km2 (400 000 sq. mi.), primarily in the region the Inuit call Nunavik. But conserving, managing, harvesting, or simply studying the caribou first requires that we know where the herds are. The most important caribou research project of recent years has been the setting up of a migration monitoring program that uses the technology of the Argos satellite system.

This program has been undertaken by the ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune – Secteur Faune Québec and the Wildlife Division of the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation, which share the management of the George River herd. In its own monitoring program, Faune Québec also works closely with the Canadian Department of National Defence and Hydro-Québec Production. These two organizations use the satellite data for their own environmental impact studies.

The Argos satellite system, jointly operated by the United States and France, allows researchers to detect, with an accuracy to within 150 metres (500 feet), locator beacons in the form of radio collars. These beacons transmit their position every four or five days. About forty caribou from different migratory herds in Northern Québec have been outfitted with these satellite collars. Faune Québec has been tracking caribou in this manner since 1991, in cooperation with various partners, to improve the conservation and management of the huge northern caribou herds. According to the 2001 census, the George River herd alone contained about 385 000 caribou, nearly 50% less than in 1993, while the Leaf River herd has more than doubled since 1991, up from 260 000 to 628 000 individuals.
Our research indicates, among other things, that Québec caribou can travel up to 6 000 kilometres (3 700 miles) per year in their search for food and shelter or to avoid wolves and insects. This incredible migratory journey of the Northern Québec caribou is unique among terrestrial animals all over the planet and one of the most spectacular wonders of the natural world—something that all nature lovers should experience at least once in their lifetimes.

The satellite map shows the weekly movements of the two large migratory caribou herds. The George river herd is represented by a red triangle and the Aux Feuilles river herd, by a green square. Only females aged at least 1 year old are tracked. The map provides evolutionary data, as caribou move continuously over their northern ranges. The arrows show the direction of movement since the latest location. Explanations and cautions about interpreting migratory data on caribou appear below.
